Biography
Ashby Gale is the Interpretive Ranger at Edisto Beach State Park, primarily working at the Environmental Learning Center, leading. Aside from specializing in educational programs about the environment, Ashby's main area of expertise is on the Pleistocene vertebrate fossils that wash up on the shores of Edisto Beach. Visitors wishing to have specimens identified may bring in fossils for further identification.
Ashby is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science. His interests include: jazz saxophone, metal detecting, photography, coin collecting, scouting, hiking and outdoor activities, creative writing, and artistic expression.
An avid freelance photographer, Ashby runs a side business under the name of Silver Photography. A gallery of photographs (available to order upon request) can be found here.
In 2009, Ashby attained the rank of Eagle Scout, and is a member of the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. He participated in and now helps advise the Tsali Lodge Dance and Drum Teams in traditional American Indian customs. Tsali Lodge is based in Cherokee Group Dance and Southern Plains group singing.
Ashby's other passion is jazz saxophone. He performs on the alto sax, but doubles on a 1928 Conn soprano. In May 2013, he traveled with the Appalachian State University Big Band on a tour of Europe, visiting: Germany, France, Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. During the summers and holiday seasons, he performs solo jazz pieces on the streets of Asheville under the alias "Sax in the City".
